When you walk into Elephant and the Dove in Skaneateles, the first thing that will blow you away is the decor. You walk in from the quaint village and feel like you’re stepping into a hip restaurant in Manhattan. But it’s not just the atmosphere that will impress you. The food and drinks are fantastic!
Elephant and the Dove is easily one of the most beautiful restaurants in Central New York. And that should come as no surprise since it was designed by Thom Felicia (of Queer Eye fame). Owned by local celeb Adam Weitsman and his wife Kim, Elephant and the Dove was designed to honor famous Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Style overflows from every corner of the restaurant, from the cocktail bar on the main floor, up to the light & flowery second floor, and down to the private dining room in the basement.
Elephant and the Dove Menu
The restaurant prides itself on offering authentic Mexican dishes with a modern, high-end twist at affordable prices. You’ll find a mix of expected and unique entrees on the menu. Tacos, quesadillas, taquitos, burritos, nachos… all made with fresh, flavorful ingredients.
Some of the dishes are classic, while others throw a fun spin on them! Try the smoked beef and gouda quesadilla for example. Unexpected yet delicious. Then there’s the customer-favorite bang bang shrimp tacos. The buffalo chicken quesadilla and Mexican pizza are other fusion dishes worth checking out. The kitchen also stocks “Impossible” meat, making any dish vegetarian friendly, with a few vegan options.
One of the aspects that truly stands out on all of the dishes is the sauces. Each plate features a drizzle - or several - of different housemade sauces. Chipotle crema, chimichurri, lime & cilantro aioli, white crema, spicy rojo sauce, avocado crema, verde sauce, habanero “buffalo” sauce… And then there are the salsas and salad dressings! Peanut salsa, pineapple-habanero salsa, house pico, spicy rojo sauce, plus lime-chipotle and orange-chipotle vinaigrettes. I know, you’re salivating. You should be.
Of course, no great Mexican restaurant is complete without a superb cocktail menu. Elephant and the Dove doesn’t disappoint! The majority of their alcohol menu focuses on liquor, with a high concentration on tequila and mezcal, of course. They also feature an impressive cocktail menu that changes seasonally. If you and your friends are ready for a challenge, order yourselves a scorpion bowl to share. A large glass skull bowl is filled with a tequila cocktail for 3-6 people to enjoy!
Don’t fill up on dinner, because the desserts are just as incredible! Choose from churros, a churro sundae, or a chile chocolate torte (which is vegan-friendly). Ohmygoodness, the sweets are the perfect ending to a visit to Elephant and the Dove. If you’re having trouble deciding, go for the churro sundae. It features three churros with three scoops of ice cream, drizzled with a decadent chili chocolate sauce. You won’t regret it.
Elephant and the Dove has a handful of specials that run weekly, so you can maximize your flavors without hurting your budget.
Start off your week right with $5 margaritas and $2 specialty tacos on Mondays. The tacos change weekly as the chef mixes up which meats and toppings are included.
Or kick off your weekend early with dinner for two on Thursdays. Get a pitcher of margaritas, nachos to share, and two orders of tacos for $49.95.
Cinco de Mayo Specials at Elephant and the Dove
While not typically open on Wednesdays, Elephant and the Dove is making an exception this week for Cinco de Mayo! To celebrate, they are featuring the “Citrus Sunrise Shooters” made with tequila, orange juice and grenadine. One shooter is $3, or grab a half dozen to share with friends for $15.
The special taco for the holiday is a fresh take on the classic beef taco. Shredded beef, cheese, lettuce, salsa, crema, and cilantro fill out a flour tortilla. Grab 3 for $14.
