Southern Comfort Food at NICE Biscuit


Have you ever woken upon the weekend craving some classic southern buttermilk biscuits? Well you’re in luck! Cristen Crew and Evan Furey have brought their love of cooking all the way from Austin, Texas. And the best part? Everything at NICE Biscuit is completely vegan - and delicious!

How did NICE Biscuit get started?

When the pandemic hit, we all found ourselves stuck at home - and many of us picked up new hobbies with our newfound free time. Like many others, for Cristen and Evan that meant more baking and cooking! And after cooking up a delicious meal from home, they found themselves dreaming of bringing their southern meal favorites to Syracuse. They saw other people pursuing their dreams, so the logical question was “Why not us?”

Their dream quickly became a reality and the couple did a test run for two weeks in June 2020. The goal was to gauge interest from the community, starting with their original recipe and the cheddar chive biscuit. It was a smashing success! Cristen and Evan soon outgrew their home kitchen and began renting kitchen space from Recess Coffee in order to fulfill orders.

Biscuits on the Weekends

Having full time jobs on top of their budding biscuit business, Cristen and Evan only serve food on the weekends - when they have full access to their kitchen space. Customers can order online throughout the week for pick-up or delivery on Saturdays and Sundays. The couple has a goal of finding a larger space that is all their own so they can expand their hours.

Their ultimate dream? To have a brick-and-mortar restaurant serving entirely vegan breakfasts. 

NICE Biscuit is 100% Vegan

Evan and Cristen converted to a vegan lifestyle about 4 years ago, and their passion for protecting the environment is a key element to their cooking. While their breakfast sandwiches look just like any typical sandwich, it’s all plant-based! That’s right - the biscuits, the “meat”, the cheese, the eggs… 

On top of the ingredients, all of the packaging is sustainable. All of the packaging is made from recycled materials, including the “plastic” bags which are completely compostable. The best part? When you order yourself a weekend treat from NICE Biscuit, it comes delivered in a beautifully wrapped box. Inside, you’ll find your food wrapped in a linen towel, with the hunny butter and jams in small glass jars. 

What’s on the menu?

Biscuits! There’s the “original” NICE biscuit, the “Cha-Cha” with cheddar and chives, and jalapeno cheddar. If you have a sweet tooth, check out the lemon blueberry biscone, the “Sweet Nellie” - a buttermilk biscuit filled with mixed berry jam, or some bite-sized iced biscuits.

Then there are the sandwiches. “The Chicky Baby” is by far their most popular

menu item, featuring vegan chick’n, sweet and sour pickles, and honey mustard. Evan’s favorite is “The Buck” with vegan jalapeno sausage, pepper jack cheese and egg. “The Wrangler” includes a spicy chorizo and beef patty, chipotle sauce, American cheese, and egg. Add fried jalapenos to enjoy it the same way Cristen does! Lastly, there is the egg and cheese slider for a simpler option.

Occasionally the menu also features seasonal, rotating offerings as well. Like the strawberry and cream cheese biscuits they had for Mother’s Day weekend. They were phenomenal.

The Future of NICE Biscuit

Cristen and Evan have plans to move to a bigger location in the coming months so they can serve more of their southern goodness to the Syracuse area. They also plan to continue partnering with other local businesses to help build the vegan community and their meal options around town.
